Child Support

In North Carolina, child support is decided by a calculation established by our General Assembly. This calculation is designed to ensure that the child is supported by the wealth of each parent, based upon the income they earn, and the expenses are shared by each parent. Each party’s income is inserted into a worksheet along with the number of overnights of each parent, and many other variables, including health care costs, daycare costs, responsibility for other children, and others and a number is produced which will represent the support of obligation of one parent to the other. Joint, or 50-50 custody does not mean that there will be no child support awarded. This is a common misconception. The larger issues driving the outcome are the incomes of the parties and expenses of the child.

The only way to know is to perform a calculation. We have developed an illustrative Child Support Calculator which, if used correctly will give you an idea of what the child support obligation will look like. Our lawyers can give you a detailed calculation.
